A variety of common chalcedony, most black onyx is treated for an even black color. These treatments date back to at least Roman times, when Pliny the Elder described the techniques. These treatments include soaking in sugar solutions, then treating with sulfuric acid or hydrochloric acid to carbonize the sugars that have been absorbed into the surface layers of the stone. This necklace can be worn doubled or tripled over, or looped around the wrist.
